Five ways you can use charcoal in your beauty routine

Beauty

The last thing that comes to mind when you think of charcoal is applying it to your hair or face.

While it may not sound appealing on paper, in truth this may be one of the best things you ever did for your body and skin.

When used properly, charcoal helps to remove toxins, dirt, impurities and treat skin conditions like acne. It does this even though it is not absorbed or metabolized by the body.

For this and many other reasons, charcoal has been a craze in the beauty community for the longest time and here are reasons why you should be crazy about it too.

1. Face masks

Charcoal has been a favourite of many because of its ability to detoxify the skin. Due to its amazing properties, it is able to clean the pores and rid it of impurities that clog them. It serves as a toner as well as cleanser for healthy looking skin.

You can either buy a pre-made mask from your beauty store or make your personalized mask at home with your preferred ingredients. To make a quick mask, mix ½ a teaspoon of activated charcoal, ½ teaspoon of bentonite clay and 1 ½ teaspoons of water.

Another popular use for the skin is DIY scrubs. It can be used as a remedy for dry skin when mixed with oils such as coconut oil which essentially restores moisture balance.

2. Teeth whitener

Teeth are an integral part of beauty for everyone. Generally, they need to be maintained and kept bright for a more attractive appearance. Charcoal can be used to brighten your teeth and remove stains that may be visible. Mix the powder with your toothpaste and brush like you normally would. There are also charcoal toothpastes that are available in stores which save you time. Consider adding it to your brushing routine to cleanse your teeth from plaque and other build up and to give them a brighter appearance.

3. Makeup products

Charcoal is also a very versatile ingredient when it comes to DIY makeup. It can be used to make eyeliner, brow gel, mascara as well as eyeshadow. It is easy to find and also mild enough to be used as make-up. Depending on the product you want to make, charcoal powder easily blends with other ingredients such as vitamin E, aloe vera and rose water to make eye friendly make up.

4. Hair detoxifier

Our hair often carries dirt and excess oils from our day to day activities. Sometimes, it can be difficult to find the right shampoo that will penetrate the roots to remove dirt while moisturizing it at the same time. A great way to solve this is by introducing charcoal to your haircare routine. Due to its properties, charcoal is able to balance the natural oils found on the scalp as well as moisture levels.

In addition to this, it serves as an amazing treatment for scalp conditions such as dandruff. Charcoal has great antifungal properties that treat some common scalp conditions. It is not harsh on the scalp and is therefore great for the hair. You will definitely get noticeable results when you use it.

5. Acne treatment

Charcoal is also seen as a holy grail for people that often suffer from acne breakouts. Its amazing properties allow it to target blackheads and blemishes on the face while balancing the oil levels. There are amazing products in the market including soaps, washes and masks that have been beneficial for acne treatment. All you have to do is give it a try.
