Things you should never say at your place of work

Career Tips

The power of the tongue cannot be taken lightly hence, warnings from holy books about taming it. Words have the power to destroy you pretty much as build you. More so at the workplace. Whatever you say at the workplace will create an impression and perception about you.

Sometimes due to stress or feeling overwhelmed, some words may slip out of your mouth. Even constructive criticism can at times come off as rude while you meant the best.

Before you are sent packing for saying the wrong things, here is a list of what you should never say at the workplace.

‘It is not my job.’

At one point, you will be requested to do something out of your job description. This could be because the boss believes you can perform the task or wants to challenge you. In other instances, he/she could be taking advantage of you but try not to look at it that way. If asked to step up and you respond with ‘it is not my job,’ it gives the impression that you are not a team player. If you genuinely feel like you cannot perform the task, request for some guidance and assistance along the way. It will show you are willing to help and learn.

‘I don’t have time to talk right now.’

When the phone rings and you’re not in a position to talk, it is better to leave unanswered than to respond with those words. It will obviously be taken the wrong way. Same thing applies when you run into someone in the office and you’re in a hurry. Tell them politely that you will book a meeting later to discuss and make sure to follow it up. This will show you value people.

S*&^$%

Cursing may come naturally to you when expressing yourself, but it doesn’t give you the leeway to do it at work. It will create a negative picture of your character and show lack of professionalism. This will not only lower your credibility but kiss that promotion goodbye.

‘No problem.’

More and more people use this phrase as a laid-back response. While it may not sound so bad on paper, it may give the person who asked for the favor a wrong impression making them feel as if they were a bother. The courteous and polite reply when someone shows gratitude should be ‘you’re welcome,’ ‘much obliged,’ or ‘it was a pleasure.’ This shows you are well mannered and considerate especially at a formal setting such as the work place.

‘I hate this company.’

Nothing will see you leave a company faster than such words. Name calling, unkind and negative statements reveal an immature attitude that can have you liable and fire-able. Despite how you feel about the company or colleague, you have options. You can either quit or deal with it. Communicate the issue to the rightful person with tact and consideration.
