Vaginal dryness is a condition that mostly affects older women although it can also occur at any age. It happens when the tissues in the vagina are not healthy or well lubricated. Vaginal dryness can lead to pain during intercourse which can easily affect the relationship with your partner. Here are some causes of vaginal dryness that you need to know about.
Stress and anxiety can affect your blood flow which in turn affects your vaginal lubrication. Emotional problems can also affect your sexual desire which then hinders the lubrication process.
2. Hormonal Change
Change in hormones is one of the common causes of vaginal dryness. It happens when estrogen levels decrease during menopause, after childbirth and when breastfeeding. Going through cancer treatment such as chemotherapy can also lead to low estrogen and hence there is lack of lubrication.
Perfumes, soaps and other hygiene products sometimes are the reason behind the problem. You might be allergic to ingredients in detergents and soaps. Underwear and towels might also have irritants causing vaginal dryness.
Asthma medications and allergy or cold medicines that contain antihistamines can have a drying effect inside the body. This reduces vaginal lubrication.
5. Insufficient Arousal
A low libido or problems with your partner sexually will cause vaginal dryness. This is especially true if there is little sexual stimulation, poor performance or early ejaculation by your partner.
6. Sjogren's Syndrome
This is a rare autoimmune system that causes dryness in the mouth, eyes and vagina. It happens when the white blood cells attack the glands that produce moisture in the body.
Treatment for vaginal dryness varies depending on the cause of the condition. It is therefore important to get to the bottom of the problem before treating. Good news is, most causes can be reversed in one way or the other.
