What is this obsession women have with twins?

Living

Carol and I have been working on baby no.2. Accidental pregnancies are common, but to plan for a pregnancy is not easy as many assume. There are many factors that come into play. You both are excited about the prospect of a child and you have debated about the preferred sex.

"A son will do, I really want a son..." Carol says, catching you off guard. That should have been your line, but like any modern man, you have been conditioned to always say, "I don't really mind the sex, a child is a child".

"Since there is Farrah, a boy will complete the picture. Better still I want twins," she says rather jumpy.

"What did you score in your high school Biology?" you want to ask her, but you think twice, the sarcasm may be lost on her.

"Why do you want twins, there is some bit of genetics involved," you engage her.

"You know, we need to get done with the thing once and for all," she quips and you feel almost sympathetic with her. Women can be deluded. Because she literally wants twins, by any means necessary.

"Babe, why can't we use IVF?" she asks, and she sounds that is what she genuinely wants.

"Why?" You ask, trying to be as calm as you can be.

"I want twins so much. Sooooo much!"

Sigh.

"I don't think whether it is plausible. It is expensive to start with and chances of failure are high, why can't we be natural? Why abuse the God given privilege and just do the natural way?"

She ignores you and continues to fantasize.

"I will go to a local hospital and inquire.

"We have insurance, so cost is not a problem," she argues and that point you want to sleep.

You have heard your female colleague shout how they can give anything to have twins. Whether it is the hope to get done with the meddlesome aspects of the pregnancy, or because it is such a cool a thing, it has become a middle-class fad, such as never seen before.

"Twins really help you get done with a pregnancy. You know babies are messy things, we want it done with once and for all..." a colleague recently told you.

And when talking to your medic friends, they tell you nothing is riskier and more misguided than that aspiration for twins through artificial insemination.

"Most end up in a miscarriage, with luck, you may succeed but few get to full term. It is basically a dangerous approach, wish women knew. Interestingly, it is the corporate women who want it," a former high school mate told you recently when you called him.

It is not that women don't know. Surprisingly this information is public and any reproductive health expert can tell a woman, but their warnings go in through one ear and out of the other.

"However desirable, tell your wife to just stick the natural way, she may be lucky and have twins..." he advices.

What the doctor doesn't know is that Carol's middle name is Stubborn.
