Bananas are a common, readily available fruit with numerous health benefits. They also provide countless beauty benefits which many people are unaware of. High in minerals like potassium, vitamins and amino acids, they can breathe life into tired, wrinkled, ageing or sun-damaged skin.
The vitamin A in bananas helps replenish lost moisture and adds brightness to weather-beaten skin.
Bananas are also high in zinc and vitamins C and E. For dull skin, mix a face mask of mashed banana, milk and some honey. Apply and rinse off after 20 minutes. If you have sensitive skin, create a facial scrub using mashed banana, exfoliating oat meal and a liquid of your choice.
Aloe vera juice is an excellent one. Apply and rub it on your skin in circular motions. An alternative scrub for those with normal skin is banana and sugar. This will exfoliate and get rid of the dead skin.
If you have acne or oil-prone skin, apply a mask of mashed bananas with lemon juice. The vitamins in the bananas will control oil production while the acid in the lemon juice will help dissolve the oil.
If your skin is extremely dry, a combination of bananas with avocado and coconut milk is the best. It will restore a youthful glow. Banana face masks are also said to help clear skin spots, and to strengthen connective tissue.

Banana peels also contain great health and even first aid benefits. In India, they rub the inside of the peel on teeth twice a day for a whitening effect. The peels are also listed as traditional first aid remedy for insect bites, itchy rashes and eczema. The enzymes in the banana peel are even said to help draw out splinters. Clearly, the list of benefits is much longer.
Next time you purchase a bunch of bananas and some of them get over ripe before you can consume them, don't throw them away. Use them in your beauty regimen.
