It has happened to all of us. You are sitting in a meeting with talented, smart professionals, just like yourself. You are torn between being intimidated and proud of yourself for being considered to give your views on the topic at hand.

Then someone raises a question which you have the perfect answer for. It is a challenge that you have dealt with and tackled effectively. But for some reason, you wait too long and someone else answers to the compliments of the team.

The way our society has raised us as women is that speaking up, especially when in a room where men are majority, does not come naturally to most. Yes, we can unlearn being given permission to speak and yes, we can train ourselves to become more assertive. But for most, it is not innate. There are ways though, to ensure your voice is heard and though it takes practice, practice certainly makes perfect.

Your value

Remind yourself that there’s a reason you’re in the room. It is not to take notes, make coffee or take diction. It is because of your value and the unique insights you bring into the conversation.

 Even though it may feel unnatural to pitch in especially when everyone else seems to have a much louder, bigger personality than you do, don’t let that hold you back. In this case the old cliché of ‘faking it until you make it’ will work wonders for your confidence skills.

Collaborate

Collaboration is not just good for entrepreneurs; it’s also useful for careers. When you do find your voice, ensure that you also give others a hand up and a seat at the table so they can hone the art of speaking up and weighing in.

This creates a network of confident women more likely to have each other’s backs and share opportunities to exponentially increase their influence.

It also serves as a promotion tool as the more people who know what amazing initiatives you’re involved in will speak on your behalf.
