My daughter Tasha who is five years old, is an only child. This reality has bothered her for so long. She has always wondered why she does not have a sibling to play with, share toys and go to Sunday school with.
I have always desired to let my guard down and give her a sibling to stop her from pestering me about it, but my career is so demanding; carrying a pregnancy is an untenable project.
I wanted to have a two-year gap between my children, but career demands have forced me to widen that gap.
Most of my friends who happen to be in more flexible careers have two kids who are two to three years apart, so they do not understand what I have been waiting for.
But there are some jobs that are so stressful, you dread carrying a pregnancy. I mean the deadlines, the work-related trips and the crazy working hours cannot allow you to carry a pregnancy to term. The beauty of life is that miracles do happen and new doors do open. A few months ago, I landed me a pregnancy-conducive job.
The pay is not all that, but what’s important is that it has flexi-time. The working hours are so friendly, I now have a life.
And it is not just a life that I have, I am also carrying the best gift for my daughter Tasha. You see, immediately I signed my contract, I launched Project Baby. I can confidently announce that I am five months pregnant.
“Mummy how come your tummy is always full?” Tasha asked me when she noticed that my belly was swelling every month.
“I am carrying your baby brother,” I told her assuming that I am carrying a boy.
She was the happiest girl when I told her. Every day she asks about how her brother is doing. From the way she reacted when I broke that news to her, it was evident that the best gift a mother can give a child is a sibling.
Although the house help was already aware of what was going on, baby girl broke the news to her and she has been telling everybody that is close to her.
Nowadays when visitors come, the breaking news from baby girl (though it is obvious to the guests) is “my mummy is carrying my baby brother in her tummy.”
I wish I could have done this earlier, but everything has a reason.
