The weekend of love (sic) is finally here with us. It signals the return of showbiz, an industry that has greatly suppressed for the past one year. Entertainment events lined up for this weekend alone promises to stimulate the industry back to action with celebrated artists from all over Africa; Tanzania, South Africa and Nigeria, are already slated to perform.
As I am penning down this piece I have my copy of the standard newspaper with its headline boldly christened “Is it time to end curfew?” This is a question that everyone begs to ask and the weekend of love falls squarely at a time when push for the nationwide curfew is on a whole new level.
The week by itself started on a high note after news hit social media that celebrated gospel artist Moji Short Babaa proposed to his girlfriend who said a big yes. All said and done, here we catch a glimpse of what is going down over the weekend.
Don’s Funhouse presents a special Valentine’s treat, a two-day extravaganza that will be happening at Don’s Funhouse inside Makwetu Villa Nyali on Saturday and Sunday. The organizer, John Chacha aka The Don, together with a team of celebrities from the Coast as well as Nairobi they have organized what Chacha terms as the ‘mother of them all.’ Music will be served by Dj Nijo from Spice Fm, DJ Bonez, Dj Ivory, Juukua the Band, Akeelah and Ali Mahaba.
This is one of the most anticipated events down at the coast since last year. This is our first major event as we wait for the industry to come back to its feet,” says John Chacha aka the Don, one of the main organisers who will be doubling as the host of the day. Dubbed the Mombasa Valentine’s Ultimate Plan, the extravaganza is categorized into two as Saturday is themed on Love Games while Sunday is slated for a Family Fun Day.
“The industry has undergone a complete low and this is one of our biggest events since last year dubbed ‘Mombasa ultimate plan,” says Chacha. “But as an industry we can’t make excuses every single day, therefore, we have put into place measures to contain the virus and we hope the president lifts the curfew,” he adds “a hungry nation is an angry nation, we have seen auctioneers at the neck of loan defaulters, power has been disconnected in some homes, it is the high time the president uplifts the curfew and allows the economy to grow,” he laments as he assures everyone that regulations have been put into place throughout the two-day affair.
“Valentine’s Day is finally here! Whether you’re planning to safely celebrate with your special one, your besties, or having some well-deserved alone time then this is the place to be, just dress up and show up,” says deejay Bonez who promised a great time for any attendees while observing the Covid protocols.

“Valentine’s weekend is the first major occasion that we have organised as we anticipate for the curfew to be lifted soon and get back to our feet. All the government rules have been put in place. All the party-goers are assured of their safety,” says Jemmo, one of the event organisers.
