Tom Cruise has been branded ‘the new Ellen’ after an explosive outburst by the star directed at crew members on his Mission Impossible 7 team divided opinions – leading to accusations the star has a history of “abusive” outbursts.
Last week, a recording of 58-year-old Tom unleashing a volcanic level of rage at two crew members who had failed to keep more than two meters apart on set contrary to Covid-19 health and safety measures of the blockbuster movie went viral.
While some applauded Tom for taking a tough stance over strict Covid health procedures being breached, many slammed the star for going too far – as he screamed expletives at employees and threatened to fire them.
Since the outburst, 50-year-old former Scientologist Leah Remini has stepped forward to accuse Tom of past abusive behaviour – while also claiming his outburst was a “publicity stunt” for him to stamp his authority on set, while claiming Scientologists do not believe in pandemics.
Writing for anti-Scientology Site The Underground Bunker, Leah wrote: "No one needs to be 'addressed' by Tom about safety codes. What more likely happened was, two crew members who were in the same zone were talking to each other and Tom saw this as an opportunity to appear as the epitome of strength; of a leader who is taking this pandemic very seriously."
She went on to allege Tom’s outburst was a classic example of someone in Hollywood having power that those beneath cannot challenge.
She wrote:” This behavior is not normal or appropriate. No one can respond to his outburst without being fired. And again, this is not a pandemic that Tom and Scientology believe in."
Daringly, she went on to allege:” Tom’s reaction that was released yesterday shows his true personality. He is an abusive person. I witnessed it, I've been a recipient of it on a small level, and I've been told of similar abuse by his former girlfriend, his employees, and his friends. This is the real Tom."
Mirror Online have approached a representative of Tom for comment.
Meanwhile, many on Twitter have accused the action star of showcasing a “toxic” approach to work – with many drawing similarities with his behaviour and the alleged ‘toxic’ behaviour of under-fire US talkshow queen Ellen DeGeneres, 62.
One Twitter user wrote in response to Tom’s divisive on-set meltdown:” It’s a bold choice having Ellen DeGeneres replace Tom Cruise in the next Mission Impossible movie. She's really leaning into this whole new bad girl image.”
One unimpressed pop culture fan tweeted: "Tom Cruise is a lunatic add him to the Ellen list already and be done with it."
And another bluntly tweeting: "Tom Cruise is toxic like Ellen."
Others argued that Tom was getting away with alleged ‘toxic’ activity – while Ellen had been slammed for it just months previously.
One Twitter user wrote: “The same year everyone is raging at Ellen for a toxic work environment, they are praising Tom Cruise for screaming at a crew member.”
And another tweeted: “So Ellen is the bad guy @TheEllenShow for staff getting s**t. Meanwhile, leaked recordings of Tom Cruise giving staff s**t, threatening to fire them and he is lauded by everyone as being strong?? Notice how men and women are STILL treated differently?”
Tom’s wobble atop his pedestal risks echoing the spectacular fall from grace that befell Ellen DeGeneres earlier this year.
Back in March, comedian Kevin Porter opened the floodgates when he declared Ellen was “notoriously one of the meanest people alive” and vowed to donate $2 to charity for every “insane” story about the star that followers would tweet at him.
Before we knew it, former security guards were stepping forward to give unsavoury accounts of working with the star, talkshow employees spoke out over a whole catalogue of alleged abuses, sparking an investigation was launched into Ellen’s talk show, and there were even suggestions the talk show legend could be replaced by James Corden as the heat intensified.
Ellen returned to screens following a media storm surrounding her alleged behaviour – with ratings for her show plummeting 38 per cent in the aftermath of the accusations against her show.
Following Tom's explosive meltdown leaking last week, five members of crew quit Mission Impossible 7 over his behaviour amid claims he had unleashed further explosive rants at crew.
