178 new Covid-19 cases reported

The Ministry of Health has reported 178 new coronavirus cases from 3,918 samples tested in the past 24 hours, raising the number of cases in Kenya to 5,384.

Health CAS Mercy Mwangangi (pictured) on Thursday said the total number of tests done since the first case was reported on 13 March now stands at 155,314.

Nairobi is leading with 100 cases followed by Kajiado county which has 21 cases.

Others counties with new cases include; Migori (17), Kiambu (16), Busia (8), Mombasa (7), Machakos (4), Nakuru (2), Uasin Gishu, Kericho, and Taita Taveta have one case each.

Dr Mwangangi said Nairobi’s Kawangware, Kilimani and Westlands areas are among the hot spots and urged residents to adhere to the Ministry’s guidelines so as to curb the spread of infections.

Of the positive cases, three are foreigners while the rest are Kenyans. The youngest is a one-year-old and the oldest is 76.

34 people had also been discharged from various hospitals after testing negative for Covid-19 bringing the number of those who have so far recovered to 1,857.

Unfortunately, two more patients succumbed to the disease, bringing the total number of fatalities to 132.

CAS Mwangangi urged Kenyans to use call centre numbers (719) for mental health purposes and not to be ashamed to reach out for help.

The Ministry was in collaboration with the ICT Ministry to make better use of technology while serving Kenyans during the pandemic.

“We as the Ministry of ICT, Innovation and Youth Affairs we are also partnering with the health care workers to ensure that we are providing the technology and facilities needed to make it easy for them to continue giving us the services we require,” CS Joe Mucheru said.
