Team formed to deal with corruption probes

Kenya: A task force has been constituted to decide the way forward on graft investigations against public officials adversely mentioned in a confidential report attached to President Uhuru Kenyatta's statement to the House last week.

The report had been forwarded to the President by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC).

The task force comprises officials from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP),  Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and EACC.

The task force was set up yesterday morning during a meeting between DPP Keriako Tobiko and EACC Chief Executive Officer Halakhe Waqo at Integrity Centre.

"In the same vein, the DCI has been requested to donate a team to bolster the process," said a statement that was signed by Tobiko and Waqo.

This follows President Kenyatta's 60-day deadline for the conclusion of the investigations on the public officials, who include five Cabinet secretaries.

"The investigating authority must ensure that the DPP has received the subject files without delay," the President said in his address last week on Thursday.

On Monday, Waqo said majority of the cases were at an advanced stage or concluded.

However, when suspended Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Felix Koskei arrived at EACC offices yesterday to be briefed on who his accusers are and the allegations, he was informed the detectives did not have details and asked to return on Thursday.

President Kenyatta asked the public officials named in the report to step aside for two months so as not to interfere with investigations.
