A 22-year-old preacher charged with creating disturbance in a church compound allegedly wanted to be paid Sh300 before he could preach, a city court has heard.
Wilfred Otieno allegedly threatened to stab Gabriel Odhiambo, one of the church’s senior pastors, on November 16 at the Full Gospel Church in Ruaraka.
Odhiambo, also a popular carpenter in the neighbourhood, told police he was in the church compound mounting speakers at around 4pm in preparation for the evening service when he saw the suspect in the compound.
The suspect allegedly said no preaching was to go on, before demanding to be paid Sh300 to preside over a special sermon that evening.
According to the prosecution, Otieno interfered with the setting up of the speakers and pushed them to the ground.
He then reportedly charged at the complainant with a knife, forcing him to flee.
Police arrived at the scene and shot in the air before arresting the suspect who apparently had become violent and was resisting arrest.
In his mitigation, the suspect said he “just wanted the money since a lot of cash is collected after every service.”
He was set free on a Sh20,000 cash bail. The case begins on February 20, 2014.
