Central Organisation of Trade Union (COTU) boss Francis Atwoli on Friday opined on the incident where a Chinese man was caught on camera caning a Kenyan employee at a restaurant in Kileleshwa.

Atwoli strongly condemned the incident and asked all those who are disrespected by their employers to report to the relevant authorities.

"If in your firm the owner is misbehaving, report to the authorities. They will learn the lesson that you can't just play with people.

"I want to request all Kenyan workers who are being mistreated by Chinese investors and other employers to report such cases to our federations. We will not sit down and watch our people being disrespected in our own country," he remarked.

Adding: “You better die a poor person than be subjected to indignity.”

Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i on Thursday ordered the deportation of the four Chinese nationals who were arrested in connection with the incident.

The deportation order was signed just hours after a Nairobi court allowed police to detain the four for 15 days pending conclusion of investigations into the incident.

The four include Deng Hailan, who was captured assaulting the employee, Chang Yueping and Ou Qiang, who were arrested for reportedly holding expired Visas.

A fourth suspect, Yu Ling, a cashier, was arrested for holding a visitor’s Visa but without a work permit.

The case was set to be mentioned on March 4.

The magistrate directed the prosecution to produce a holding charge to enable the four to apply for bail.
