A Senate committee has summoned several people of interest in a probe into a recent accident that left 10 school children dead in Mwingi, Kitui County.

The Senate Committee for Roads, Transport and Infrastructure wants them to explain how the accident involving a school bus happened.

The team chaired by Kimani Wamatangi (Kiambu) issued the summons on Saturday after visiting Kangina bridge along the Mwingi-Garissa road, where the St Gabriel Primary School bus rolled after colliding with a lorry.

Mr Wamatangi, who was accompanied by Enoch Wambua (Kitui) and Malachy Ekal Imana (Turkana), named those summoned for grilling as the Kenya National Highways Authority, the commandant of traffic in the country and the Kitui traffic boss, the contractor who is rehabilitating the road and the St Gabriel school administration.

The team said if any of the parties failed to honour the summons, it would invoke its powers to ensure they were severely punished.

The parties are required to appear before the committee on September 5.
