Pumwani set to offer outpatient services

Nairobi residents can now access outpatient services at the Pumwani Maternity hospital (pictured) from tomorrow following an upgrade of the facility.

City Hall has fitted the hospital with an outpatient centre that boasts of healthcare equipment valued at Sh10 million. Medical drugs to the tune of Sh2 million have also been purchased.

Health Chief Officer, Mohammed Sahal yesterday revealed that the decision to upgrade the outpatient centre was informed by the desire to have more residents access affordable and quality health care.

“The outpatient wing will handle minor ailments such as malaria, typhoid, emergency injuries and others even as the county strives to cater for the increasing health needs in the county,” he said.

Sahal further revealed that Pumwani hospital had specialised in offering inpatient services for the last 93 years, but the upgrade would ensure that there would be an increase in the number of patients accessing treatment at the hospital.

The Chief Officer further divulged that a medical officer will be put in charge of the unit and there will be also a consultant in place who will handle ‘special’ cases. More clinical officers will also be seconded to the outpatient unit by the county health department.

Pumwani Medical superintendent Dr Farhia Abdirahman Affi, lauded the county government for prioritising health matters saying this had led to an overall improvement in services across the county.

“We are working round the clock to ensure Nairobians as well as those seeking treatment get quality health services,” she said.

In the current 2019/2020 financial year, the health docket was allocated Sh7.4 billion aimed at improving health services. This comes after an announcement by the county government had set aside Sh400 million for the upgrade of community health centres in the city.

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko announced that the county would be partnering with community health centres in a bid to improve medical services. While noting that community health centres play a vital role in offering medical treatment, he reiterated that the facilities will be upgraded alongside other county hospitals.
