The writer Nora Ephron famously said, “our faces are lies and our necks are the truth”. We’ve spent years pampering our faces and forgotten about the neck. It’s easy to neglect our necks as most aging issues arise in our 40s or later. However, if you want to tell a person’s real age, just look at their neck.

Here are some tips on how to take care of this delicate and visible area.

1. Include your neck in your facial regimen

Your neck needs as much love and attention as your face. Start including your neck when you cleanse, moisturize, and treat. The skin on our neck is thinner than on our face, therefore it’s more likely to show signs of aging. Cleanse your neck both morning and night and gently apply moisturizer in an upward motion. Exfoliate once a week to get rid of dead cells and to brighten your skin.

2. Don’t forget sunscreen

The skin on our necks is usually dry therefore this area is prone to damage from the sun. Damage from the sun is usually irreversible and it’s one of the biggest contributors to premature aging. Use sunscreen daily, with an SPF of at least 30. If you prefer not to use sunscreen, cover up this area with a scarf or turtleneck.

3. Maintain a stable weight

Weight fluctuations may cause your skin to sag making it look older. Maintain your weight through exercise and healthy meals. Studies show that those who exercise have younger, more elastic skin. Keeping hydrated will also help your skin to retain moisture.

4. Eat collagen and omegas

You may choose to take a collagen supplement or drink a cup of bone broth every day. The more collagen you have to support your skin, the firmer it will appear. Try this for at least two months. Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids also aid in the production of collagen. When consumed daily, they help the skin repair itself. Omegas can be found in avocado, fish and flaxseed.

5. Night cream

After cleansing, apply a retinol-rich cream to the entire neck area. Retinol reacts to sunlight therefore it should only be used at night. Retinol boosts collagen and exfoliates your skin, thereby reducing uneven pigmentation. It also reduces fine lines and wrinkles, making it a beauty staple for anyone over 40.

Lastly, try to sleep on a comfortable pillow which is not too high. Also, keep your neck muscles toned by regularly doing neck exercises.
