“A witty and charming source of guidance, inspiration, and strength” is how her husband Rt Hon Raila Odinga describes her. Mama Ida Odinga celebrated her 70th birthday on Monday at a private party held at her Karen home and we can’t help but gush at how good 70 look on her.
Mama Ida was born in August 24 1950 and has been married to former Prime Minister Raila Odinga for 47 years.
They met at the University of Nairobi where Ida was pursuing her Bachelor of Arts while Raila was working at the university’s Department of Engineering.
The power couple is blessed with four children: the late Fidel Odinga, Rosemary Odinga, Raila Jr and their lastborn Winnie Odinga.
Mama Ida was a teacher for more than 20 years and some of her notable students include the late Bomet Governor Dr Joyce Laboso.
After leaving teaching, she founded the League of Kenya Women Voters to promote opportunities for women in the political arena.
Ida is also an activist and she has championed a host of causes focusing on women, children and health in Kenya including fight against breast cancer and fistula as well as eradication of the chigoe flea.
Most recently, Mama was behind the Gender Bill 2018 that was seeking to guarantee the nomination of female candidates to Parliament. She even appeared in Parliament to support sitting women MPs during the debate.
