Sleep expert explains why it's so difficult to get up in morning during lockdown

When we first discovered that we were going to be working from home and on lockdown, we assumed this was the perfect time to start getting a decent night's sleep.

We can finally get that full eight hours a night everyone raves about - or even sleep longer.

But while many of us are enjoying extra sleep and should then be feeling well rested in the morning, some are still finding it rather difficult to get up and get on with their day.

Weird, right?!

Well, thankfully, there's a pretty good explanation for why we're feeling so lethargic all the time and sleep expert James Wilson, aka The Sleep Geek, has shared it with us.

James works as a Sleep Behaviour and Environment Expert, helping people to sleep better and developing products, services and environments that help people get the sleep they deserve.

Speaking to MirrorOnline, he said: "Some people are reporting that they are struggling to get up in the morning and that they are feeling more lethargic during the day.

"There may be a couple of reasons for this. The stress and anxiety created by the coronavirus crisis is finding its way into our sleep, and impacting on the quality, which can be seen in more people reporting that they are having vivid dreams.

"We are also seeing people drinking more than they normally would. It is always worth remembering that alcohol is not a sleep inducer, it is a sedative, it knocks you out, but it doesn’t give you good quality sleep; in fact it gives you incredibly poor quality sleep."

He continued to say: "If you do drink, I am not saying don’t, but just understand the impact alcohol has on your quality of sleep.

"Other factors making us feel more lethargic is us not being able to exercise as much as normal.

"Additionally getting lots of natural light early in the day helps us feel more alert and at the moment this is more difficult.

"So if you are getting out for a walk, run, cycle, doing it in the morning might provide more benefit when it comes to alertness."
