Mum shares fridge hack that will make your food last longer during lockdown

Many countries remain in coronavirus lockdown, with people only allowed to leave their homes to go to work if they are unable to do it from their house, shop for essentials and to exercise.

As such you're probably limiting the amount of times you nip to the supermarket to stock up on food.

If you're trying to use up everything you've got in your fridge at the moment and make the ingredients go a little further, one mum has a handy solution for you.

Posting on the Facebook page, The Pantry Mama, the woman revealed an incredibly simple way you can make jars of food last longer and stop them from going mouldy.

All you have to do is store the jars upside down in the fridge.

Yes, really.

The parent explained: "A great tip to stop food in jars from going mouldy once you open them is to store them upside down in the fridge.

“It seals them and stops them from going bad, which saves you time and money."

Many were quick to thank her for sharing the tip, with one fellow mum confirming it does work.

"I did this with my last jar of tomato paste and got through a whole jar before it went mouldy," she commented.

And she's not the only one that agrees.

Cathy Moir, Senior food microbiology consultant with CSIRO Agriculture and Food, told MailOnline that this trick works well with jars of pasta sauces and salsa - anything thick.

"By turning the jar upside down, that surface where a mould may have landed when you opened the jar is now squashed against the lid without much air and it will find it more difficult to grow," the expert said.

Moir added that to make the jars last even longer, you should try using a clean spoon each time you dip into the jar.

She also recommends leaving the lid off for as little time as possible when you are using it.
