How to set a good example for your kids

Parenting

Your child will mimic what they see, the good, bad and ugly. I have found that the simplest way to teach my daughter good habits is by doing them myself. In that way, because kids have a way of always wanting to do what their parents are doing, I am sure that at the very least she will pick up some good practices.

Below are a few tips to help you be a good example for your kids.

1. Generosity

It’s so important to give back to society and this doesn’t have to be in a big, blown out way. Teach your children the importance of charity work by doing things that they can see and relate to. For instance, give away unused clothes and encourage them to do the same with theirs. If you have more food in your home than you need, pack it up nicely and pass it on to someone who needs it. When your child sees you thinking about the less fortunate in society they will want to do the same.

2. Work

Complaining about work seems to come so easily to many of us but since work takes up such a big chunk of our lives, it’s beneficial to have a positive attitude towards it. Parents often tell their kids the importance of working hard while at the same time they’re constantly saying how fed up they are of their job or looking for ways to take the day off or get to work late, or simply doing the bare minimum. This makes it harder for your child to get motivated to work hard.

Change your attitude towards work by doing your best and talking about the positives of your day especially when you’re in front of your kids. If your job doesn’t bring you joy, look for one that does. In this way your child will develop a positive attitude towards work and feel even more determined to work hard, just as their parents do.

3. Self care

There’s been a lot of talk about self care this year. Looking after yourself physically, mentally, emotionally and even spiritually makes for a happier, more fulfilling life. The easiest way to teach your children the importance of self care is by showing them. Let them see you opting for healthier food instead of junk. Drink a lot of water. Exercise often. Read for knowledge and pleasure. Get enough sleep. Avoid saying negative things about yourself. These simple practices may not break the bank but they are essential for a good life.

4. Relationships

Like it or not, the type of relationships you have will affect your child and many times they will have similar relationships as well. Therefore, invest in healthy relationships. Meet up with friends and family. Send out gifts and greeting cards. Be a good listener and seek others’ opinions. Be kind and compliment others. Forgive and apologise. Get rid of unhealthy relationships.

5. Challenges

Do you remember growing up hearing parents say how they were number one in class? This often made me wonder who was number two, three, last, if all the parents were number one. Be vulnerable in front of your children. Let them see that you struggle with some things but that you don’t give up. Step out of your comfort zone and face your fears. This will teach your children resilience.
