Valentine's Day, although meant to spread love, can be very overwhelming for those who have suffered serious heartbreak or have probably spent a good part of the year single.

Throughout the week, couples show off their partners on social media with sweet messages, not to mention the big day when the streets will be covered in red flowers and love.

If you're lucky enough to have caring friends, you might get a message of love thrown your way, but if not, here are some ways to celebrate Valentine's Day as a single person:

Organise a Secret Santa with your single friends

Since you might not all have special people to spend the day with or spoil with gifts, you might as well spoil each other. You can pick a friend at random to give a gift to, and then meet up on D-day to drink and exchange gifts; it might not be the Valentine's experience you were hoping for, but at least you won't feel left out.

Make it your Galentine's Day

Instead of mopping up your relationship and hating the season of love, why not have a sleepover with your girlfriends and talk about your love lives, eat and watch love movies? You may all want a different experience, but at least you won't be lonely.

Take advantage of special offers for couples

During this time, many hotels and spas will be running specials for couples, so grab a friend and take advantage of some of these offers. Go for the free spa days and discounted room rates and enjoy your staycation instead of staying home alone.

Go on a road trip

If you can get home and see your friends or family, so much the better. Getting away from the hustle and bustle of the city and visiting the countryside will not only give you a weekend with familiar faces but will also distract you from your loneliness.

Reward yourself with random acts of kindness

There is nothing more rewarding than helping those in need. Instead of staying at home and letting your emotions run high, take time out to visit an orphanage or street children and buy them food and clothes. You may not feel special, but at least you'll have made someone's day.

Treat yourself

Finally, remember that no one can love you more than you can love yourself. Make Valentine's Day a day to celebrate your life, your achievements and the challenges you have overcome. Go to your favourite restaurant, have an expensive dinner and just celebrate yourself.
