Hate him or love him, former Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko has a way of touching the lives of the less fortunate. His kind acts, controversies notwithstanding, have earned him a popular reputation amongst the majority of citizens. Solomon Koko looks at some of the many instances that the former county boss has shown acts of kindness to Kenyans. 1. Conjestina Achieng rehabilitation The iconic female boxer had sunk into a shadow of herself, a situation that led her to move to her rural home with her mental health in decline. He later posted a photo as they celebrated Mashujaa Day in style with Conje's condition evidently restored."Joining one of our great shujaas Conjestina Achieng for her 45th birthday," he wrote. "This also gave us a chance to share happy moments of the day with lunch, soft drinks, cake cutting, dance and fun with everyone at the Mombasa Women rehabilitation centre. Happy birthday Heroine." The post caught the attention of celebrities including comedian Churchill, Carol Radul amongst others, who applauded the move. 2. Foiling the Westlands land-grabbing attempt A fortnight ago, he made headlines yet again when he moved in to resolve a case in which a Kenyan couple, Niraj Shah and Avani Shah, were facing the mystery eviction and demolition of their Ksh.80 million home in Westlands. According to the couple, despite possessing a court order and a city council notice barring the eviction, a private developer under the name Lariak Properties is alleged to have used an auctioneer to deploy a mob who affected the demolition of the property, leaving it a shell of its former self and making away with valuables. All this under the watch of security personnel. "We cannot allow this kind of impunity from city cartels. It must stop," Sonko said. The former county boss went ahead to get the actual details of the property leading to the arrest of the auctioneer behind the demolitions. A Zachary Baraza was reprimanded pending further investigations. He was later released on a Kshs 200,000 cash bail. The action drew reactions from netizens who congratulated Sonko for stepping in for the distraught family. 3. Highlighting the plight of Kenyans in Arabic Nations, assisting in burial arrangements The infamous repetitive cases of Kenyan ladies suffering with some losing their lives in the Middle East were pronounced and needed stern action. Sonko offered to assist affected families, even helping ferry home victims who had succumbed under mysterious circumstances. "The body of the late Jacinta Mugure Kamau which was exhumed after being buried at Akkar cemetery in Lebanon as an unknown and unclaimed body Lebanon was laid to rest today at her family home in Ruai, Nairobi. where Sonko rescue team outfit helped in the burial arrangements. Similarly, he helped bring home the remains of a 29yrs old Kenyan lady- the late Margaret Ruguru Waweru who'd passed and been left to lay at a hospital mortuary in Saudia Arabia for 7 months. 4. Baby Kyla Baby Kyla's mother Linda sneaked her way through to get the attention of Mike Sonko at a busy Nairobi club. Linda was informed her firstborn would be able to see only after undergoing corrective eye surgery in India. Sonko then sponsored her trip to India where she underwent corrective surgery before jetting back However, this was followed by complications that would later force her to be sent back to the same hospital in Hyderabad India where the doctors performed a similar surgery. "I'm glad to report that baby Kyla is again recovering well and was discharged from hospital this week," he wrote. 5. Moi Referral accident After coming across a terrible road accident, he offered to rush and settle hospital bills for the casualties. "I just left Moi Referral Hospital in Voi, a few moments ago to visit victims of a road accident involving a Mombasa-bound bus. Most of the passengers had travelled to Nairobi to finalize medical checkups as part of the required clearance procedures when applying for jobs in the middle east."6. Satrine Osinya and Gift His story came to the limelight after his mother, Veronica Osinya, died while shielding him during a terror attack at a church in Likoni. Satrine, then 2 years old, had a bullet lodged in his head and had to be evacuated by flying doctors who successfully dislodged it, saving his life. Sonko, who had facilitated the medical expenses, went ahead to adopt Satrine and his brother Gift. He recently posted a touching message as they celebrated his 10th birthday. Sonko with baby Osinya. "You came into our family 8 years ago as an angel and a blessing and since then, we felt that our family had become complete. You're a source of happiness to us and we always feel blessed and lucky having you around healthy and happy despite what happened to you on the 22nd March-2014 when you lost your lovely mum to a terror attack and escaped with a life-threatening injury. We thank God for healing and protecting you and your elder brother who rescued you from a hail of bullets which were being sprayed by the terrorists inside the church." 7. Helping disabled boy access better education Days after a feature highlighted a disabled boy in Busia, Gilbert Otyeng', who crawled 6km daily to school, then Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko intervened and enrolled him to a special school to save him the trouble of accessing education and even offered him a wheelchair. The class four pupil further had his fees cleared and was given shopping that could last a substantial time. The seventh born in a family of nine had been disabled since he was five. He had to crawl 1.5 km in the morning and evening and the same distance during lunch hours since his mother could not afford food at school.
8. Highlight on minor who had a forked hoe lodged in his skull
Following a social media outcry after a video emerged of a minor who had a forked hoe lodged in his skull, with relatives accusing medics of neglect for taking long before attending to the two-year-old. Sonko quickly intervened and committed to settling the arising medical bills. However, the minor lost the battle while undergoing the delicate procedure to get the hoe off.
9. Flying out 10-year-old Scandy Chelang'at to India for surgery
