When umbrellas, beads earned chiefs fairest maidens

Nairobi vendors are a special breed. They are rainmakers. At the slightest darkening of the cloud, they mint handsome profits by selling umbrellas.

Had these vendors been plying their trade 132 years ago, they would have been some of the most powerful Kenyans.

During the dawn of Kenya's westernisation, an umbrella was a symbol of power and affluence. This currency had been introduced by a pioneer administrator Francis Hall who was initially employed by the Imperial British East African Company to organise stocking of trade caravans on their way to Uganda.
