My word: You’re doing a great job, Mama!

Living

Over the past few months, since the beginning of the pandemic, there has been quite a tussle over definitions.

Two terms that have controversial definitions are “frontline workers” and “essential services”. The issue seems to be that, in making these definitions official, who would be included and who would be left behind? The two are not only co-dependent, they are also very, very important.

We all recognise the roles of the paramedic, community health worker, nurse and doctor to the police officer and supermarket worker, but there are thousands of hidden roles that enable all these workers to function – from the medical insurance professional to the hospital administrators and pharmacists.

And what about those who provide us with clean water and sewage services. Those who ensure we have money, electricity, cooking gas, internet, telephone services and medical supplies? And those who ensure we have information?

We see and hear the news reporters, anchors and writers – but there are so many working behind the scenes to ensure the information we get is accurate, clear, and concise and all that good stuff.

The thing is, all these services are provided, not by robots or computers, but by human beings. People, yes people, who have loved ones to care for.

People who need to protect themselves and their families from infection. People who have to find a way to do their jobs to perfection while and at the same time be there for the loved ones who need them.

As we celebrate Mother’s Day tomorrow, let us think about the mothers out there who have left their little ones at home so they can dedicate their time and energy to being part of the machinery working round the clock to ensure we have what we need in the fight against the coronavirus.

As Eve, we have dedicated the entire month to honouring these women. Join us as we celebrate mothers working in essential services and the nannies who step in for them when they leave their families behind in this period.

Follow the hashtag #MomsontheFrontline or visit the Motherhood segment for more stories on celebrating mums and nannies.
