Kakamega Woman Rep Elsie Muhanda has unveiled a special committee to help Mumias East MP Peter Salasya aka PK to get a wife. Muhanda was speaking at the burial of the mother of Kakamega County Assembly Speaker James Namatsi last Saturday.

Among those in attendance were Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa, former Sports CS Rashid Echesa, Matungu MP Peter Nabulindo, and a slew of MCAs. Muhanda announced the formation of a special committee to assist Salasya in locating a 'Kienyeji' wife.

Mr Nabulindo, a second-term MP and Salasya's neighbour, will chair the committee, according to Muhanda.

Focus on MP duties

"We want him to get a wife so that he can focus on his duties as a parliamentarian representing the people," Muhanda told mourners amid applause.

"We have formed a committee led by your colleague, Mheshimiwa Salaysia, to ensure you get a good wife from our community who will ensure our people are taken care of while you are in Parliament," Muhanda said.

"When you are in Nairobi, there are people who do not know where you are from, and ladies from Nairobi will keep chasing you around and things may get worse," Muhanda explained. "That is why we want to get a good wife for you, especially from the Wanga community, who will interact and live with your people because she understands them well."

The Woman Rep said they will look for a good wife from the MPs tribe or village rather than the city. "We need a local woman who will look after you and your people, and she must come from within."

Salasya, according to Patrick Dhahabu, one of the Luhya elders, needs a wife, and not just any wife, but someone who can relate well with people and always welcome all and sundry in the MP's home.

"He must have been lucky because our community rarely bequeaths unmarried men with huge responsibilities like in his case. The community entrusts leadership to responsible men who have demonstrated leadership in their families," the elder said.

Entertaining mistresses

"It will be inappropriate for the MP's mother to continue receiving visitors in his home; those are the responsibilities of a wife."

Some elders warned the MP to stop entertaining mistresses and posting their photos on social media platforms, claiming that doing so casts a negative light on the lawmaker.

Salasya, 31, admitted it was hard for him when opponents insisted that an unmarried person is irresponsible and that his ability to lead was questioned.

Benard Musebe, the legislator's aide said the project to get him a wife is in top gear.

Salasya vied on the DAP-K party and trounced five seasoned politicians after garnering 12,140 against his closest competitor David Wamatsi of ANC who bagged 9,043 votes.
