Woman on the move: Pierra on changing the showbiz space

A successful deejay who is arguably the local pioneer Kenyan female deejay to hit the international market, DJ Pierra Makena is a girl owning her entertainment space.

As the showbiz sector went down in 2020 due to Covid 19 – with events and other social activities going on a break – innovative as they come, Pierra came up with a new concept christened Park n’ Chill, a drive-in music concert that has become the talk of town since.

This put her ahead of everybody else making her the foremost successful event’s organiser of 2021 as her monthly concerts got filled to capacity.

“Initially, the idea was all about bringing friends together. It grew and bloomed into a full concert and with time, we got partners coming on board. Our 2022 New Year Eve concert in Meru was a real extravaganza and I am rearing to go this year,” Pierra tells Eve.

However, it won’t be business as usual for her this year.

“I want to employ more creative ideas into the art of events organisation and deejaying as I feel that the industry has really stagnated. When I compare the growth in the industry with South Africa, I see how far behind we are. Their concerts are big and performances are powerful. We just have to do things differently this year,” Pierra challenges.

“See, many female deejays have turned this whole art into a nude thing. We even saw a female deejay in South Africa strip naked before thousands of fans. Yes, I also wear hot pants and all that but I feel that female deejays are selling more nudity than an experience. This must change,” she goes on.

A mother of one, the deejay who is also a seasoned actress and prolific radio and TV presenter says she has learned to do things differently so as to cut an edge for herself and stay ahead of the competition.

“I believe in being contented and living within my means. I believe in balancing between public and personal life. People see your success and mounts pressure on you on matters that are pegged on their expectations on who you should be. That is where most of us, especially woman in showbiz get it wrong. I simply want to live my life,” she concludes.
