Essential oils need to be part of your hair care routine. Essential oils are fragrant oils that are extracted from plants through a distillation process. They contain healing properties that help hair thrive, not to mention how great they smell!

There are currently more than 90 types of essential oils, but you can start off with three basic ones: tea tree, lavender and peppermint.

This article elaborates the benefits of the above oils, and why you need to incorporate an essential oil or two into your hair care routine.

Tea tree oil has a very clean aroma. This oil has anti-bacterial properties, and gives your scalp a slight tingly sensation. This sensation stimulates your scalp as it increases blood flow and stimulates hair growth. Lavender essential oil has a calming fragrance. You can combine it with tea tree oil to prevent and kill head lice. This essential oil also helps with skin inflammation, as well as stimulate hair growth.

Bonus tip: if you’re ever having a hard time falling asleep, put two drops of lavender oil onto your pillow! It's aroma is calming and relaxing.

Peppermint essential oil has a minty, fresh aroma. The tingly sensation it gives your scalp increases blood flow, promoting hair growth. This oil also helps fight off lice and eliminate dandruff.

The number one thing to remember is to not put any of the above oils directly onto your scalp. Always mix them with a carrier oil, i.e. olive oil, grapeseed oil or castor oil. This is to avoid burns as essential oils are pretty potent.

How to: Add a couple of drops of the essential oils to a carrier oil inside an application bottle. Shake it then apply.
