Meghan Markle and Harry share sweet goodbye message to fans in final Instagram post

Entertainment

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have thanked well-wishers and fans for their support in a moving goodbye message ahead of them quitting the Royal Family today.

They shared the update on their SussexRoyal Instagram page - their final post on the account as the Queen has banned them from using the word 'royal' in their branding.

They shared a graphic reading: "Thank you to this community for the support, the inspiration and the shared commitment to the good in the world."

The couple, who are now living in LA with their son Archie, announced their plans to quit royal life in January, a decision which reportedly caused upset and anger behind Palace walls.

They used their final message, which they signed "Meghan and Harry" rather than using their official titles, to speak about the difficult times we're currently in as the world battles coronavirus.

They wrote: "As we can all feel, the world at this moment seems extraordinarily fragile. Yet we are confident that every human being has the potential and opportunity to make a difference—as seen now across the globe, in our families, our communities and those on the front line—together we can lift each other up to realise the fullness of that promise.

"What’s most important right now is the health and wellbeing of everyone across the globe and finding solutions for the many issues that have presented themselves as a result of this pandemic.

"As we all find the part we are to play in this global shift and changing of habits, we are focusing this new chapter to understand how we can best contribute.

"While you may not see us here, the work continues.

"Thank you to this community - for the support, the inspiration and the shared commitment to the good in the world. We look forward to reconnecting with you soon. You’ve been great!

"Until then, please take good care of yourselves, and of one another.

"Harry and Meghan."

Before the message was released, a spokesman for the couple said: "The Duke and Duchess of Sussex would prefer that in the immediate weeks and months, the focus remains on the global response to COVID-19.

"As was agreed with The Royal Family, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will no longer use the name Sussex Royal for their charitable organisation, Instagram or website.

"The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will spend the next few months focusing on their family and continuing to do what they can, safely and privately, to support and work with their pre-existing charitable commitments while developing their future non-profit organisation."

Meghan and Harry have appointed Catherine St Laurent as their new chief of staff and executive director of their non-profit organisation.

The couple also confirmed that the Sussex Royal Foundation, which they were in the process of setting up, "will not continue".

A spokesman for the couple said: "The Trustees of the Sussex Royal Foundation have been an invaluable resource to The Duke and Duchess, providing essential guidance. The Duke and Duchess are incredibly grateful for the Trustees’ support and counsel in recent months."

The Sussex Royal Instagram account will remain in existence but will be inactive.

Referring to their patronages, the spokesman said: "The Duke and Duchess remain committed and supportive to their patronages and will continue to work closely with them."
