Chuka University has acquired Sasini House in Nairobi as part of its expansion programme.

The seven-storey building, located on Loita Street in the central business district, was bought at a cost of Sh509 million.

Speaking at the university's main campus in Ndagani yesterday, Vice Chancellor Erastus Njoka said they bought the building to accommodate the many students who want to join the university.

"We will rename the building. It will be known as Chuka University Elimu Plaza. It will enable us to provide higher education for more Kenyan and foreign students," said Prof Njoka.

The university is also establishing a Sh3 billion research centre at the Ndagani campus, where the student population has hit 16,000.

"Demand for higher education across the country has increased. That is why we have embarked on improving our infrastructure," said Njoka.

The university's Embu campus has 500 students; the Igembe campus has 400 while the new Tharaka campus has 200 students.

"We want to take Government-sponsored students to the Ntulili campus," said Njoka.

"We also want to set up a research centre for the incubation of different innovations, from agriculture to business, and the tender for the project will be awarded soon."
