Name one woman who doesn’t want clear, even skin complemented with beautiful natural-coloured lips? I can’t think of anyone either! This is what many women who love to wear their natural face aspire to have.

Lips darken over time for many reasons. External factors like the sun and lifestyle habits can cause the skin to turn dark.

Natural remedies are usually the best when you want to reverse that damage. Manufactured products with chemicals might make the situation worse which is why you should opt to do it naturally. As much as it may take longer, do not be discouraged because it works!

Here are essential tips on how you can get rid of dark lips naturally.

1. Lemon juice

Lemons are one of the most effective remedies for skin discoloration. The juice has some bleaching properties and it’s also gentle on the skin. One of the ways you can use the juice effectively is by applying directly on the affected area and leaving it overnight. Repeat this process a couple of times throughout the week until you get the desired results. But, should you have very sensitive skin it is best to do a patch test to be on the safe side.

2. Moisturize your lips

The skin on your lips can dry out just like any other part of the body. And once your skin is dry, there is an opportunity for discoloration. Always have some lip balm by your side so that you won’t get the urge to lick your lips because this will also darken them over time. You can make natural DIY lip balms with simple ingredients like shea butter, coconut oil and your preferred essential oils. It really is that simple.

3. Homemade scrub

A scrub made of sugar, lemons and honey can also clear up the discoloration on your lips. They exfoliate them and you’ll notice a huge difference after some time. Make your lip exfoliator by putting some sugar in a bowl, honey then a few drops of lemon juice. You have to be careful not to put too much lemon juice because the sugar won’t be as effective when scrubbing. And remember to go easy on the scrubbing. Do it too hard and you will get cuts and painful tears that could easily have been avoided.

4. Brush your lips

Brushing your lips is a great way to naturally exfoliate your lips. You don’t even need ingredients with this so it’s a simple way to rejuvenate your lips. Whenever you’re brushing your teeth or keeping up with your oral hygiene routine, you can gently brush your lips afterwards. Doing this everyday will remove dead and dry skin eventually lightening up your lips.

5. Adjust your lifestyle habits

Working on habits that cause your lips to darken will accelerate the process of clearing them up. Smoking, not drinking enough water and excessive consumption of alcohol are some of the lifestyle habits that affect your lips. If you smoke or drink, eliminate those habits or at least try and limit them. And as you do so, drink enough water daily.

Natural solutions for dark lips usually take time. This can dampen your mood especially if you’re not getting the desired results as quick as you thought you would. But with enough patience and consistency, you’ll get the results you want in no time.

You should also have SPF lip balms to use whenever you’re carrying on with your day. The harmful UV rays of the sun could still darken your lips even after being consistent with your routine. So as you scrub, moisturize and exfoliate, buy a good SPF moisturizer for your lips.
