There are many changes you can make in your life to appreciate yourself more. These small efforts really boost your confidence and help you take steps towards your personal goals.

When you have that will power to improve your life, there’s no turning back. You become an unstoppable force that’s ready to take up any challenge that comes your way.

With that said, here is a list of things you can do to encourage self-love in 2020.

Master your emotions

Our actions are usually a depiction of how we feel inside. It’s often easy to spot some trends that could indicate an inner battle of some sort. Learn to understand things that trigger you, those that tick you off and things that make you happy. Once you do this, you’ll be able to handle every situation with emotional maturity and put things in perspective when facing difficulties.

It’s also not a bad idea to have a journal and remember to take those quiet moments of self-reflection.

Set realistic goals

The harsh truth about life is that things don’t always go according to plan. I mean, it’s good to be motivated and all but it’s even better to set realistic goals for yourself. If you set the bar too high, the end result will always be self-doubt, self-criticism and feelings of inadequacy. In the long run, you might start developing confidence issues that you’d have easily avoided. Be real with yourself and set short term and long term goals that will actually motivate you.

Drop the bad habits

One big part of self-love is accepting that you have to let go of those habits that don’t benefit you in any way. You could be struggling with habits like watching too much TV and spending too much time scrolling through pointless apps. You might even realize that you’ve been a little selfish, critical of other people or lazy. The point is to handle these traits from a place of love so that you start making positive changes. Otherwise if you keep denying your truth or handle things in a self-depreciating way, you’ll never move forward.

Challenge yourself more

Challenging yourself will make you realize the potential you never knew you had. It’s the best way to build self-awareness and practice self-discovery. This practice of self-love doesn’t always have to involve extravagant tasks like climbing a mountain or jogging many kilometers every morning. It could be, for example, working out for five more minutes than you normally would or pushing yourself to cook your meals instead of spending money on take-out every day. It’s the small steps that really contribute to the bigger picture.

Be strict with your boundaries

You should never allow yourself to become a ‘yes man’ because you’ll end up being frustrated every time. Honestly, I know it can be hard to say ‘no’ to people because a part of you might feel like you’re letting others down. But at the same time you need to prioritize your needs too and keep your self-respect and self-love intact. In fact, people will actually respect you more once they know they can’t manipulate and walk all over you anymore.

Treat yourself

Don’t wait for someone else to see your worth and treat you to a spa day, weekend getaway or shopping spree. It’s good to celebrate you once in a while because that’s just part of appreciating yourself. It’s even better to treat yourself after achieving certain goals so that it feels like a real celebration. It can also be a bit toxic to get caught up in the cycle of over treating yourself and being riddled with guilt afterwards. Find a balance.
