Five lifestyle changes to consider after being diagnosed with cancer

Living

After a cancer diagnosis, so many things run through a patient's mind as they do not know what the future holds. All the plans and dreams they had made for their life seem to crumble and many lose hope.

The lifestyle changes that come after a cancer diagnosis may change your life, and you as a person.

You will have to live a healthy life and watch your stress levels. You will have to stop drinking and smoking. You might even have to avoid being around people who drink and smoke to cut out any temptations. Your mental and emotional health at this point is key to your general wellbeing.

These are more lifestyle changes you might have to adopt to after a cancer diagnosis:

Exercise regularly

Exercising regularly is one of the ways one can fight getting cancer. In the same way, it is important to keep exercising during and after a cancer diagnosis.

Exercising helps to reduce fatigue, loss of strength and adding weight. Try to avoid sitting and lying down for long periods of time.

Accept support from your family and friends.

Having a strong network of friends and family who support you through your journey is important.

People who have social and emotional support after being diagnosed with cancer tend to have better quality life and can live longer as they are happy and not stressed.

Joining a support group can also help you as you will be around people who are walking the same road as you. They are also likely to understand you more than anyone else.

Eat well

A healthy balanced diet will help you manage the side effects of your treatment and will also improve your health and help you recover faster.

Make an effort to have vegetables and foods that are high in fibre like beans, peas and lentils. Eat probiotic foods like kombucha, raw garlic, raw or cooked onions, beans and legumes. Avoid red meat, lamb and pork. Have smaller portions of food and avoid foods that are low in nutrients but high in calories.

Ensure that your alcohol intake is completely cut off during your treatment.

Eating well may also lower ones risk of getting cancer in the future.

Get enough sleep

Sleep for about 7-8 hours daily as this improves your ability to cope with mood changes, and helps to control your weight. Getting enough sleep also helps with your memory and your coping ability.

Set a specific bedtime and follow it to the latter. Maintain this same routine on weekends and holidays.

Make your room sleep friendly by making it dark when it's your bedtime and keep the temperature cool. Keep your phone away and do not turn on the TV.

Manage your stress levels

Managing your stress levels will help you maintain your mental and physical health.

Your mental wellbeing is very important after a cancer diagnosis as this will be a determining factor in how your treatment works your general health.

Also, use different relaxation techniques like yoga and meditation. Dedicate some time in your day to this and watch your stress levels reduce, and you will be more relaxed and confident in yourself.
