So you are a virgin? Sorry, No one really cares!!

Girl Talk

“It is one of the great superstitions of the human mind to have imagined that virginity could be a virtue,” French philosopher Voltaire once said. He definitely nailed that one!

Virginity is overrated. Female virginity is just another social construct meant to subjugate women. Men were expected to marry chaste brides without applying the same code to themselves.

The pioneers of feminism must be turning in their graves when they see the high esteem some people still attach to virginity.

Given the sexual permissiveness of our generation, it is a bit far-fetched for parents to expect their daughters to remain untainted until the day they exchange nuptial vows.

It is about time we shed the veil of hypocrisy and stop judging ‘wife materials’ based on the state of their hymens.

As long as it’s your choice and you’re fully informed of— and comprehend— the consequences, virginity should not be something to lose sleep over.

There will be no village elders standing outside the room on your wedding night ready to paint the town red as your husband walks out in triumph with a blood-stained sheet that is meant to vouch for your ‘purity.’

Men are no longer angling for a virgin bride. To the contrary, a majority of them prefer women who know their way between the sheets. Simply put, they don’t care about your sexual past. Moral implications aside, sexual compatibility is a real thing. Sexual preferences in the bedroom may completely differ.

I don’t know about you, but I would rather not find that out after proclaiming my commitment to the relationship in front of hundreds of guests.

The dilemma sets in when you start wondering whether to walk out of the sexually unfulfilling marriage or stray. Either way, something will have to give.

Many a marriage have culminated in divorce due to sexual frustration. It is sad to date someone for a long time only to realise there is no chemistry between you. I am not saying that the lasses who are still holding on to their V-cards should give them up to the next sleaze ball who sneezes in their direction.

What I am trying to put across is that there should be no shame in sex.

Unfortunately, many of us grew up with our parents hammering into our innocent minds that sex is dirty and should be avoided at all costs. Many people still carry this mentality into their marital beds. However, age comes into play where virginity is concerned. A sixteen-year-old who is not a virgin would definitely raise eyebrows, just as a forty-year-old virgin would. But that is just my opinion.

What do you think?
