A blast from the past: Mary Elizabeth Okello

Achieving Woman

When you talk about private schools in Kenya, one of the most prominent ones that come to mind is the Makini Schools, and Mary Okelo and her late husband Joshua Awiri are the scholars behind Makini Schools. Elizabeth a daughter of an Anglican clergy Canon Jeremiah Awori, she comes from a family of famous Kenyan's including former vice president Moody Awori and the late Dr Nelson Awori.

In her own standing, Dr Mary Elizabeth Okelo is an achiever and has many firsts to her name. She is one among the first 13 girls sponsored by the government to study for their A- levels at the Alliance High School. She became the first woman bank manager in Kenya in 1977.

She was first African representative to the World Women Banking Organisation in 1985. Founder and chair of the Kenya Women's Finance Trust, Elizabeth is a banker whose intention was to advocate for the financial strengthening of women and that she did.

Mary continues to run Makini school alongside her three children. She is a grandmother, an elder of the Moran Order of the Burning Spear. She continues to mentor and inspire women across Africa.
