Cottage style entry way for your home

Living

Cottage style entry wayThe foyer, also known as the entry way is the first room you see when you enter a home; in fact it is at this spot that you greet and welcome your guests. Most people’s expectations of how the rest of your home looks like are set by what they see at the foyer. Decorating this space in a welcoming way is vital if you are striving to impress. How about decorating it with a homey cottage theme. It often has an especially welcoming appearance. Most foyers are narrow and long and a few alterations are enough to turn your foyer around.

Accessories: To pull your cottage style décor together, you must use decorative accessories that befit the style. Use cottage style wall art, flower vases and knick-knacks, in colours and patterns that match your cottage style. Have some seashells in shallow bowls (adding some beach sand could also be a great idea!). Porcelain or crystal vases full of flowers will pull the look together.

Windows: If you have one in your foyer, work with plain white sheers — avoid dark heavy drapes.

Lighting: Any room in your home including the foyer requires appropriate lighting. Overhead ceiling fans in a white finish with clear glass lamps filled with seashells are ideal; avoid anything dark. Wall sconces too, will work for the foyer.

Floor: Go for area rugs with a cottage decor. Wooden floors are also ideal for this style.

Walls: To get this look, the colours you paint on the wall matters a lot. Go for soft muted whites, light yellow and light blue or use wallpaper with a small pattern such as dots to add the country charm. Dark paint will make the foyer appear narrower. If you don’t love some colour on your wall, paint the walls a neutral shade and add the colour in the accents that you incorporate. Adding a peg or hook rack to the wall for purposes of hanging jackets, bags, hats and umbrellas adds charm to the look and is quite functional.

Mirrors: Apart from visually widening the space, a large rustic wood-framed mirror will complete the look.

Furnishings: Minimal furniture in your foyer gives it the best look. Simply place a small chair and shelf, or a rustic wooden bench for sitting and storing shoes at the end near the door, if space allows. If you have space for a small table, display something beautiful on top of it. Keep off anything unnecessary; the space should be welcoming and functional.
