All ye hopeless romantics, just be it

Living

Hopeless romanticsLove flowers, being pampered, taken out to dinner and just getting all lovey-dovey on Valentine’s? Tell you what, there is nothing wrong with it.

My girls at work Sophia, Edith, Nancy and I had a Friday chat on #MorningExpress KTN hosted by Sophia Wanuna, and one of the things we chatted about was whether or not Valentine’s meant a thing to us. Each of us had a different opinion. It got me thinking about how fulfilling it is for those who take these honoured days seriously.

We are all bone once, live life once and shall die once. This is no new fact, so keep it in mind as you read this.

Not everyone gets to mark his or her birthdays and it applies to Valentine’s Day, world hugging day, world toilet day or any other. There is, however, a good number who take these days as seriously as Christians take Easter Sunday.

MOVE ON

They prepare for it like all special days, expect surprises, send gifts and are anxious to receive them.

While many question why it’s only on Valentine’s that people want to express their love publicly, there are also those who think this day is meant to cement their relationships at whatever levels they are. Call them hopeless romantics or the lost-in-love kind, they find it satisfying to observe the kind of people they’re surrounded with.

Some will go visit babies’ homes or orphanages, visit inmates at a jail cell or even hangout as single girls. So, be it dinner you went to, a blind date, he put a ring on your finger, a promotion at work, a prayer at your place of worship or a flight to lunch in a place unknown and it was worth every second — it is okay to be a believer in this day.

Just like some girls take it personal when someone forgets their birthday, so does it get for hopeless romantics who believe in love tales.

If someone forgot your birthday, they might as well make up for it on Valentine’s Day. One of my mentors always calls me on Valentine’s Day — to check on my occupational and professional progress, achievements, challenges and family. That he doesn’t forget makes this day meaningful.

Of course, there are those who broke up or were disappointed in a way. That is life and people have to move on. When that happens, destiny is chosen. The future is ahead of us and as each day counts, each Valentine’s Day should count in whichever way you look at it.

If you don’t at all believe in this day, this article, too, wasn’t meant for you ;-)
