Preventing hair colour from fading

Living

The moment you colour your hair, it is your wish that the colour permanently stays that way. Unfortunately, due to some circumstances, your hair losses its hues fast whether you styled it by yourself or it were done by a hairstylist. These hair products, tools and behaviours will hasten colour loss on your hair, thus you should avoid them:

1.  Never wash your hair within 48 hours after colour is applied to it: According to research, the colour continues to set up 48 hours after it is applied, thus washing it within this time means you wash off some of the colour.

2.  Avoid cuticle-opening shampoo: When the time is appropriate to wash your hair, avoid ‘volumising’ shampoo as they have a tendency of opening up your cuticles making it easier for your hair to lose colour.

3.  Avoid alcohol: Avoid styling products that are rich in alcohol. Alcohol accelerates loss of hair colour. Your stylist should be able to guide you accordingly.

4.  Avoid hot oil: Use it only when necessary. Hot oil is known to fade hair colour. The heat of the oil opens up the cuticles making the oil cling to the colour and when it is shampooed, it goes with the colour. If you have to use hot oil limit its application to the hair tips.

5.  Use warm water: Never wash your hair with hot water, as it will strip it of colour faster. Shampoo in warm water and if you are comfortable, use cold water for your final rinse.

6.  Avoid hot tools: Use hot tools such as like blow dryers, flat irons minimally. If possible, air-dry your hair. If you must blow dry, ensure it is set on ‘cool’.

7.  Limit shampooing: Reduce the number of shampoo sessions to minimise wear and tear on your colour. Diluting your shampoo with water will ensure your colour lasts long and your hair stays soft, healthier, stronger and shinier.

8.  Avoid the sun: It is capable of doing as much harm as the hot tools.  Styling products rich in SPF will protect your hair colour from fading in the sun.  Products with vitamins A, C, and E will also protect your hair colour from environmental damage. Cover your hair whenever it is exposed to harsh environment.

9.  Wear a swimming cap: If love to swim, always wear a cap to protect your hair from chlorine.

10.  Use professionals: If your hair fades fast, have a professional colour it.
