Now what? What to do after getting your KCSE results

Living

By PETER KAMURI

As the dust generated by the release of the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Examination (KCSE) results released last week settles, reality has begun to sink in. Those who did the examinations have started to explore the career options available to them.

However, the biggest hurdle to most fresh school leavers is navigating the labyrinth of career choices, since the information that is available might not be adequate. And that is where career fairs come in.

Brian Oteba, a career counsellor and a teacher, says people have begun appreciating the important role careers and jobs fairs play in providing information and opportunities to learn about careers and jobs openings.

"This is probably the reason why most institutions are now pitching up tents at almost every corner of the busy streets to advice the school leavers on careers," notes Oteba.

He advises the fresh school leavers to take advantage of career fairs.

"They can provide you with a chance to learn about careers opportunities available and skills required. Career fairs can also help fresh school leavers identify training opportunities available, duration and mode of study, not forgetting the cost," he tells Job&Careers.

But for one to reap the maximum benefits of these career fairs and expos, Oteba says you need to prepare effectively.

"To start with, ensure that you do little research and establish a few facts about the institutions which are showcasing their products before attending a career fair. This can also help you prepare questions in advance," he advises.

He says students should be specific and declare their career interests candidly and confidently. "Arrive early as this will give you enough time to settle down and to register if there is need to do so. You will also be well placed to know where to start and getting the day’s programmes," advises Oteba.

"Do not forget your writing materials like a pen or pencil and a note book. Have a folder to hold your materials. Although most of these things may be provided, it is advisable to be prepared before hand," he adds.
