Confessions: 'My friend thinks I'm selfish because I refused to let her propose at my wedding'

There's arguably nothing better than a good old wedding. It's often a time where you get to catch up with friends and distant family you haven't seen for ages, and at the very least, it's a good excuse to have a little dress up.

Romance is in the air and there's nothing quite like the feeling of watching two people you love make lifelong commitments to one another.

If you've been to your fair share of weddings, you'll know that quite often guests of the event like to cash in on all the lovey vibes, and every now and then, new engagements are formed.

When it comes to proposals at weddings, some people love it and others hate it - after all, it can temporarily switch the attention away from the happy couple, which is why one bride said 'no,' when her best friend asked if she could propose to her partner on the big day.

"I am getting married at the end of the month and my childhood best friend and Maid of Honour has asked me if she can propose to her girlfriend at my wedding," the bride explained on Reddit's Am I The ******* forum.

"She says that it would be nice if she could get engaged at my wedding because she is with her girlfriend because of me and my partner and it would be sweet to get engaged when we are celebrating our love and commitment to each other. Her girlfriend is a university friend of my partner and they met at our housewarming party."

But, while the bride agreed that the sentiment was lovely, she - like many other brides - didn't want a proposal to distract from her own wedding.

"I told her no because it's my wedding so she said that I was being a selfish b***h and I couldn't let her have this one good thing because I always had to make myself the centre of attention," the bride explained.

"I told her no again and that if she still wanted to propose at my wedding she better tell me now so I can get a new Maid of Honour and that she is uninvited from the wedding. She ended the call and we haven't spoken in nearly a month."

However, the bride's soon-to-be-husband doesn't think letting her friend propose is such a bad idea, and isn't worth losing more than 20 years of friendship over.

The bride was met with mixed responses from Redditors over whether she should have allowed her best friend to propose, but the overwhelming majority agreed that it's her wedding and therefore her choice.

"I love how she thinks you're selfish for not wanting her to propose at YOUR wedding. Like, what? I'd keep her demoted and uninvited at this point. Sad, but honestly she doesn't sound like much of a friend," one user commented.

Meanwhile, another added: “'You’re selfish for not letting ME use your venue, your decorations, your time, your champagne, your photographer, and your guests’ attention in order to take the spotlight off of you at your one and only wedding in order to focus it onto myself, instead.' What nerve to call YOU selfish."
