One person died and eight others were admitted to Nyahururu County Hospital after consuming alcohol at a wines and spirits shop.
The hospital’s chief executive officer, Dr Patrick Waihenya, said nine people were brought in on Sunday morning vomiting and complaining of stomach pains.
“Residents reported to us that there were people lying by the roadside at Jogoo area, and we sent a team of medical officers to check. They brought in the nine to the hospital but unfortunately, one of them died,” said Waihenya.
The other eight are being treated at the facility in Nyahururu town.
According to residents, a bar owner called them for a party to celebrate the birth of his new baby, where they were offered alcohol.
“He called us for a party where we were given free drinks. My friends started complaining of stomachaches and we found them lying by the roadside today morning,” said Joseph Mburu, one of the survivors.
He said the drink was the same one they usually take, and wondered why it had affected them this time around.
Area police commander Mary Kiema said they were looking for the owner of the shop after he allegedly disappeared after the incident.
“We have his personal details and our officers are on the ground. We will soon arrest him to face charges once investigations are complete,” Kiema said.
Nominated MCA Irene Wachuka demanded immediate investigations to avert any future loss of lives, adding that the bar owner must be questioned.
