A Catholic priest recently found himself in court for allegedly assaulting a woman and her three-year-old daughter.

The priest identified as Father Japheth Mwove Kimanzi however denied the charges which were preferred against  him in a Kitui court.

Appearing before Principal Magistrate Esther Boke, Kimanzi faced two separate criminal counts.

In the first count, Father Kimanzi was charged with causing grievous harm to 23-year-old Veronicah Musali Mutua while in the second count, he was charged with causing grievous harm to the minor.

The court heard that the accused committed the offences on November 16 at about 10pm in Muthale village, Mutonguni location in Kitui County.

Musali and her daughter had to be admitted at the Muthale Mission Hospital in Kitui West after the alleged attack.

She sustained head injuries.

Kabati OCPD Juma Londo told The Nairobian that doctors confirmed that Musali and her baby were stable and out of danger.

“I urge those with relevant information about the attack to cooperate with the police so that those behind the crime can be brought to book,” Kabati had said.

The accused was ordered to place a bond of Sh100,000 or pay Sh15,000 cash bail.

The case will be heard on April 25, 2016.
