There was a showdown in Nyeri town after King'ong'o Maximum Prison wardens clashed with the public over two teenage girls.

The drama began when Eunice Wanjiru, a food vendor at the Nyeri-Nyahururu matatu terminus, noticed two teenage girls crying out for help as they were being dragged away by two women and intervened.

"The girls told me that they had been forced to work as house helps for the two women who were wardens at the Nyeri Prisons and were trying to escape," Wanjiru explained.

The two girls then said they had been lured from Cheptais, Bungoma County, with the promise of being sent to schools in the area.

Wanjiru then raised the alarm and her colleagues joined forces with the crowd to protect the girls from the two officers.

In retaliation, the women called for reinforcement. A prisons lorry with armed prison wardens arrived. The warders threatened to shoot at the crowd baying for the blood of their colleagues.

The crowd stood its ground and refused to release the two girls.

The deputy officer in charge of  the prison confirmed the incident and promised to investigate.

"We shall conduct our own investigations to find out what happened," he said.
