Former Safaricom CEO is the new chancellor of Maseno University

Kenya: President Uhuru Kenyatta has appointed former Safaricom CEO Michael Joseph as the new chancellor of Maseno University.

Joseph’s appointment started January 6 and is contained in a gazette notice No.399 dated January 2. He replaces Prof Florida Amakobe Karani, who has served for six year since her appointment in 2008. At the same time, Industrialisation Cabinet Secretary Adan Mohamed has appointed his former colleague at Barclays Bank Group Charles Ongwae as the new managing director of Kenya Bureau of standards (Kebs). 

Ongwae, who will take over Kebs on March 1 according to gazette notice No.401 signed and dated January 18, is currently the managing director Barclays Bank Uganda.  Before his elevation to Cabinet, Mohamed was serving in a similar position at Barclays Bank Kenya.

Appointment

Ongwae has also served as chief financial officer for Barclays East and West Africa. He holds an MBA in Strategic Management and a Bachelor of Commerce degree, both from the University of Nairobi, and is a Certified Public Accountant.

In his gazette notice, Uhuru also revoked the appointment of Titus Gateere as chairman of Post Bank to pave way for former Mt Elgon MP Fred Kapondi.

Information and Communication Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi had also appointed six members to the board of Information and Communication Authority. They are Prof Timothy Waema, Esther Kibere, Bertha Dena, Prof Elijah Omwenga, David Mugo, and Ugas Mohamed. The six will join former Alego Usonga MP Edwin Yinda, who was appointed two week as the chair of the board.

Similarly, Education CS Jacob Kaimenyi has appointed inspectors under the Biosafety Act. They are Dr Willy Tonui, Prof Dorington Ogoyi , Prof Theophilus Mutui, Josephat Muchiri, Julia Njagi, Nehemiah Ng’etich, Eric Korir, Hellen Mbaya, Martin Mwebia and Teresia Njoroge.
