Bumula Ward Rep Henry Nyongesa in court for impregnating girl

Bumula Ward Rep Henry Nyongesa was last Friday arraigned before a Bungoma court charged with impregnating and aiding a form one student procure an abortion.

Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Keriako Tobiko had ordered for the arrest of the Ward Rep after the matter was revealed by a lobby group.

In a letter written to Bungoma County CID Commandant Peter Mabeya, and seen by The Standard, the DPP had argued that there was overwhelming evidence to charge the MCA with defilement and helping to procure abortion.

VAST EVIDENCE

The case was consolidated by the court to allow Mr Nyongesa, the school girl and the doctor who procured the abortion be charged together, but each with their own accounts.

Mr Nyongesa is charged with the conspiracy to commit a felony. The girl is charged with purchasing of the drugs with an intention of procuring unsafe abortion, while second accused Dr Joseph Owola is charged with procuring and supplying drugs to be used in procuring unsafe abortion to the under-age girl.

They denied committing the offences before Principal Magistrate Peter Areri. Hearing is set for December 9.
