How to keep your house warm in style

You are sitting at your desk at work, quivering and shivering and waiting to get home to some warmth, except your home is not as warm as you would want it to be. How do you beat the cold while still keeping your home stylish?

Studies show that humans get depressed during cold months yet surprisingly Scandinavians and Danes have mastered the art of being happy even during the harshest winters. The solution isn’t jumping in bed with all seasons of your favorite series. Here’s ways to keep your entire home warm and cozy in harsh Nairobi “winter”.

Block out the cold

Fix any broken windows. Fill any gaps in sliding windows with foam strips, silicon or crack filler. If your door leaves a big gap at the bottom, fill the space with a doormat or a stuffed animal. However, you should allow enough ventilation in rooms that get lots of moisture like the kitchen and bathrooms.

Let there be light

Daylight, that is. Draw your curtains open during the day to let in light. Light boosts your mood and keeps you scoring high on the happy-meter. Having a dark room with curtains drawn shut will work in the reverse in keeping you warm.

Cozy up

For your living room; get throw blankets that work with your design theme. Or throw in a faux fur throw. Throws are decorative and also double up as a duvet of sorts when you are curled up on your couch.

You will need more accent throw pillows as well, the more the warmer. Bright colored pillows in different sizes and textures create a feel of warmth. Pillows are stuffed with fiber or down feather which both possess insulative properties.

Warm colours

Bring in warmth by using warm colored accent pieces. There is no need to paint up an entire wall for this. Accent pieces in vibrant colors that inject energy in your psyche will work just fine.

Mirrors

Mirrors reflect light and warmth when used correctly. Hang your mirrors opposite a natural source of light like a windows or an exterior door.

Bring in wood

Wood and furniture or accessories finished in wood tones will bring in warmth to a cold space. Wood wall panels, wooden floors, wooden picture frames, a warm inviting wooden coffee table will warm up your space in different ways. By wooden furniture we mean furniture actually finished in wood.

Bedrooms

Adding an extra fleece blanket underneath your everyday bedding during colder months is imperative. Also, consider a fuzzy bedside rug or better yet a huge carpet that can cover majority of your floor space.

Wall-to-wall carpeting is also a good option during this season. Switch up your bedroom curtains to a set with heavier fabric to keep the cold at bay and the warmth in.
