Jomo Kenyatta's 'mganga': Why wooden cross was buried in her coffin

Five priests conducted Njambi's burial demanding to destroy her paraphernalia

Though she was called Margaret, Njambi was reportedly not baptised and had to be buried like a non-believer.

The cross went down in the grave together with the coffin because "she was not baptised, had not been to church and thus no reason to plant it on her grave" said Reverend Geoffrey Kinyajui.

Five priests conducted the burial demanding to destroy her paraphernalia but that was never to be. They also demanded a ritual and church service be conducted to cleanse the family.

Two sets of prayers were conducted; one for the family and the other to destroy her tools of trade that Njambi ordered the family to keep well for her successor.

However, a Kikuyu elder Kahu wa Kariuki told The Nairobian the church was misinformed. "This thing cannot end and it will be war to burn them. There is difference between a witch and a witchdoctor.

One time, somebody from her lineage will succeed her and if this is not honoured, that person could go mad."

Despite the huge turnout at her burial, no photos were taken and speeches were restricted to priests.
