Unhappy police officers threaten to kill Kavuludi over vetting

Fresh death threats have been issued against National Police Service Commission (NPSC) chairman Johnston Kavuludi. The threats are allegedly coming from officers unhappy with his handling of the vetting exercise.

The threats are contained in a letter addressed to President Uhuru Kenyatta. Kavuludi is accused of receiving bribes to clear corrupt officers. It is not the first time the NPSC boss is receiving threats. On August 27, 2013, a man’s head was found in a box left outside the commission’s office at Luther Plaza, off Nyerere Road.

The carton had the writing, ‘Kavuludi you are next.’ A pair of hands chopped from the wrist were also found in the box dumped in a flowerbed. The incident came as the commission is finalising the vetting exercise that has seen about 89 officers sent home.

It was widely believed that officers opposed to the vetting were the ones behind the death threats. The commission has since relocated to Sky Park Plaza in Westlands. In the latest threats, the disgruntled officers threaten to eliminate Kavuludi through the bullet and have appealed to Uhuru to intervene by sacking Kavuludi.

“A number of us in several meetings have been thinking of pushing a bullet into his dirty mind, but we want to give your excellency a chance to address our concerns... not that vetting is being resisted, but it should be done fairly and the real bad guys shown the door. But the opposite is what is happening and this is what we want to demonstrate in this writeup,” states the letter.

The NPSC head is accused of receiving bribes ranging between Sh 500,000 and Sh5 million. Kavuludi dismissed the corruption claims, revealing that threats on his life were real, leading to the scaling up of his security over the last one month.

“I have information that they want to kill me. They are now trying to find out where I live. But I will remain steadfast and I am ready to be investigated over any claim and everything I own,” said Kavuludi.

Inspector General Joseph Boinnet warned the author(s) of dire consequences, saying it is a serious offence to threaten someone.
