Ndaragwa MP Francis Nderitu’s bodyguard shot dead in Nairobi

Nairobi, Kenya: Police have launched a manhunt for gunmen who shot dead a bodyguard attached Ndaragwa MP Francis Nderitu in a botched robbery in Kariobangi area, Nairobi.

Sergeant Daniel Wainaina Mwangi was alone in the car when gunmen who had been robbing motorists at the Kariobangi roundabout struck Monday at about 10p.m., shooting him in the shoulder. The bullet went through his lung.

Mwangi was first rushed to Huruma Nursing Home and later transferred to Kenyatta National Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police say the gang escaped without stealing anything from the officer.

His Ceska pistol with 14 bullets was found tucked on his waist, police said.

The gang is believed to have intended to rob the officer but he refused to open the windows as ordered, prompting them to shoot him, Starehe OCPD Bernard Nyakwaka said.

“They escaped on foot soon after the shooting and police are looking for them. The officer was not with the MP at the time of the incident,” said Nyakwaka.

Other victims said a gang had been attacking and robbing motorists at a traffic jam in the area when they stumbled on Mwangi.

They had been robbing the motorists of cash and mobile phones. Police said a hunt was launched in the area after the attack but no arrest was made. The family of the deceased officer has been informed of the incident.

Cases of armed robberies are on the rise in the area with police struggling to contain them.
