Kenya asked to budget for hiring teachers this financial year

BOMET: The Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) wants the Government to set aside funds for the recruitment of teachers in the 2015-2016 financial year.

Knut Secretary General Wilson Sosion said they have reports that a budget prepared by the executive to be tabled in Parliament had not factored any money for the recruitment of teachers.

Mr Sossion warned that failing to do so would cripple the education sector.

"A budget without money to employ teachers will not work in Kenya considering the big shortage of teachers in our school," Sosion said, adding that the Government should prepare for worse if it sticks to the current budget to be tabled in Parliament soon.

Sossion asked Members of Parliament to protect the education sector by ensuring the budget prepared captures an allocation to recruit more teachers.

"As a union, we are asking Parliament especially the Committee on Finance to stop the Executive's reckless behaviour of trying to deny learners a chance to access quality education through provision of enough teachers in schools," he said.

The Secretary General at the same time asked MPs to impeach Education Cabinet Secretary Jacob Kaimenyi for alleged incompetence.

Sossion said is Parliament does not remove Prof Kaimenyi, the education sector in the country will go into ruins hence make the country's future bleak.

Speaking during the burial of Bomet East MP Benard Bett's brother Julius Sitienei at Kiptulwa village in Longisa Ward, Sossion alleged that Kaimenyi displayed outright incompetence by gazetting the basic education regulations.
