John Terry: Arsenal will never win the league with ‘tippy tappy football ‘

John Terry has rubbed salt in Arsenal's wounds after claiming: "You can't win titles with tippy tappy football."

Terry insists champions-elect Chelsea are not boring and have been the Premier League's great entertainers this season as he joined in Jose Mourinho's attack on Arsenal fans.

Unhappy Arsenal fans chanted "boring, boring Chelsea" after the goalless draw at the Emirates took Mourinho's Premier League leaders another step closer to the title.

Chelsea boss Mourinho bit back by claiming the Arsenal fans were "bored of not winning the title" since 2004 and Terry has now piled into the row by claiming pretty football alone is not enough.

Terry said: "Possession and tippy-tappy football's great, but if you are not winning games you're not going to win the league.

"We are definitely not boring and if we do go on to win it, nobody's going to remember the performances when, perhaps, it's not been that exciting.

"But we've dug deep and other teams haven't done and that is why they are so far behind us. Possession is great, we could see that from the Manchester United game last week.

"Let's not forget the first half of the season, up until Christmas, we were the best side by far. The football we played with Fabregas and his assists, the goal at Burnley [Andre Schurrle] and goals after that. The play was different class.

"Things then went us against us and the manager being him, came up with the way to get us through games and that's where he's at his best.

"Let's not forget we were the best side up until Christmas for sure and we have actually beaten the teams who have made things difficult for us."

Terry also bit back at Arsene Wenger who had claimed it is "easy to defend" while Mourinho hailed his captain's defensive display at Arsenal as his best ever for Chelsea.

"It (defending) is an art," said Terry. "Listen, I totally respect him [Wenger], he is a great manager, but from our point of view, I am just delighted.

"To hear that from the likes of the manager (Mourinho), who stands there and assesses you day-in, day-out, is really nice. But I just have to keep on and keep going, because it can go the other way."

Gunners boss Wenger prides himself on winning with style but, with just one trophy in ten years, Arsenal fans have not had much silverware to keep them happy.

Arsenal's eight game winning streak was brought to an end by Chelsea's rearguard action as Mourinho's defensive tactics halted Wenger's late title charge.

But despite Chelsea taking another big step towards a third title in 10 years under Mourinho, Terry insists they still cannot take it for granted.

Terry, who leads his Chelsea side at Leicester on Wednesday, said: "We are a step from where we wanted to be, after today, which was not losing the game after 90 minutes.

"Listen, Leicester are flying, you can see they have got a bit of wind in their sails as well. It is going to be a really tough game but it is in our hands and not anybody else's.

"We are grinding out results, we have got the quality in the squad, so hopefully we can get over the line because we are very close."

Terry's team mate Gary Cahill was one of six Chelsea players to be named in the PFA team of the year which the England defender says is recognition for their achievements this season.

Cahill added: "We have worked tremendously hard to put ourselves into this position we are in. It's a great position to be in. But the hard work is still to be done. We just want to achieve our goals as soon as possible.

"I'm amazingly honoured [to be in PFA team of the year] really. It was one of the best things for me when I found out the news I was thrilled because it's your colleagues that you are playing against.

"People that are respecting your performances throughout the whole 11 that has been chosen. I was amazingly happy with that to be honest. And proud.

"But it would top it off if we could finish the job this season, and that is the main focus for us. But to have so many Chelsea players in there shows that we have been doing something right this season."
